Counter Culture Hero Dies

George Carlin, one of my favorite comedians has passed away at the age of 71. Complaining of chest pains, he went to the doctor and later died. Carlin had a history of heart problems. I always admired him though lately I agreed with him less and less. He always looked for a different take on things in life and made me search my beliefs deeper. I will miss him. Does anyone remember him as the conductor on Shining Time Station?

My prayers go our for his family. We will miss him.

Yeah, George was unique...

I see you live in rural North Dakota. Your Blog doesn't say exactly where.

I'm a playwright. I plan to spend the month of September in Northwest North Dakota. For 2 reasons. The first is to write a full-length play. The second is to do research on my grandfather who lived in Norma many years ago. He was the son of Hans Christian Andersen, the writer.

I wonder if you know of any places a writer might stay...

Thanks.

Thanks for the shout, Dale. Where is your area of California? I'm a Southern Californian myself. I don't know much about Northwest ND, I spent 10 years in Devils lake and now live halfway between there and Grand Forks. Have you ever been to Medora? There is a great (I'm told) festival there that includes the Medora Musical. Hans Christian was one of my favorite boyhood heroes.

Greetings Again!:

I heard a little of Mr. Carlin's work when he first became popular, but, since comedians do not usually interest me, I did not spend much time with it. Am I to understand that 1. he was not the radical leftist I had assumed him to be in his early days or 2. if he was, he served to challenge your own beliefs and to defend them to yourself and/or others? Since I heard at least two bleeps in one or more sound bites played soon aftr his death, was he usually coarse in how he expressed himself, or hopefully only occasionally so?

Were I to visit your daughter's Myspace page, I would be able to read what she has written there (while, of course, not being able to see the pictures), but would be unable to comment since I have some accessibility issues which not even your sister was able to help me sort out, they having been _MOST_ unresponsive to our attempts to contact them, or, when they _DID_ respond, sending form responses which had _NO_ real relevance to the issue we were raising. Your sister said that she may have seen some poetry on that page.

Hoping, as customary, that this finds you well,

J. V.

Yeah he was always a radical leftist. He used foul language because it emphasised ideas. He was originally partnered with Jack Burns and was rather conservative. After he saw Lenny Bruce, though, everything changed for him. My mother was a Democrat through and through and my father never spoke about politics. All my perceptions came from her and network tv. Later I came to challenge everthing I believed and settled into the comfortable conservative I am today. This meant a lot of comedy I had loved was seen through a different set of lenses. I still laugh at it. Cheech and Chong, and the Firesign Theater are two more examples. Oh well, even a lot of the rock I like for the music I distain at the same time for the message. Such is life. Maybe I'll wax more philosophically on this later.

I'm amazed that I also blogged about memorial day, my son, and the flag and got comments on George Carlin. Hmmm....

This was _MOST_ interesting and informative!

Dare I say it, at least you and I know that I for one commented about your son, and, by implication in relation to him, those other two topics.

After a brief season of relief, we are due to return to our customary hot-and-humid Summer weather tomorrow, or at least to begin returning to it. If I am not mistaken, conditions get less humid the farther west one goes, though by no means cooler.

p.s. I forgot to say that, if all goes well, I get a new air conditioner installed tomorrow noon, which, despite only having cost me a total of $116, will be quieter than my old unit had suddenly become this year.
Or I should have said will _HOPEFULLY_ be quieter!

Hey, how you been? I've been really busy...

George Carlin was not a "radical leftist". He stayed mostly apolitical and stopped voting in the early 70's (by his own words). He just had firm beliefs about right and wrong, and freedom. He was not a conservative, by the way, with Jack Burns, just more conservative than Jack was at that time.

Check out my blog for some great Carlin quotes. :) You probably won't like them, though.
